In a real emergency, the order matters more than the speed. Do these three things and you've usually stopped the damage from compounding before anyone arrives.
- 1.Shut the main water valveWhere the line enters the foundation — round handle or quarter-turn lever. Can't budge it? Shut it at the street meter instead.
- 2.Kill power to the water heaterFlip its breaker (electric) or gas valve to OFF. A heater running dry or flooding hides a second emergency inside the first.
